I've heard people say you can tell a lot about a person by asking if they would rather open a second set with Chinacat or Scarlet. Which are you and why?

Why choose one or the other when you can just have both together? [:

tough choice. Scarlet jam more exploratory. Fire has a tendency to get repetitive (blasphemy!) China upbeat and danceable, but predictable. I prefer something different than either, but forced to choose, probably Scarlet-Fire.

To me, the China>Riders never kicked ass in quite the same way after the hiatus...so if it's a later-day China>Rider vs. Scarlet>fire, then I guess I'd have to say Scarlet>Fire...although it makes me feel a bit like I've done something I should feel guilty about...

But what is it one can tell from this choice? That's what I want to know...

I'm a little conflicted about the choice, so I guess that's what it says about me. I like Liam's Scarlet- Rider choice, so I'll go with that. Also, I like the way the girls dance to scarlet better, so there's another reason to go with the scarlet.

I have seen so many china>riders and only one scarlet>fire and I still have to go with china>rider .... plus I have never been a big fan of Fire on the Mountain. Its just one of those tunes that others love and I find repeatative and boring.

Just read Rom's post ... couldn't agree with ya more bud.

wow, you stole my thunder. I was thinking of posting that about FOTM...I too find most of them boring, but I'm a big fan of stand alone Scarlets (and with Donna-go figure)

it's the transition from scarlet into fire that "moves me".

I was at today's anniversary show at MSG where they opened with Touch into Scarlet. Had that gone into fire, the place would have erupted. Sadly, they followed it up w/ Little Red Rooster (talk about a bathroom break song...)

Oh well, they made up for it the next night in the second half of the second set....

hi zimmer.... ok, i'll play..... answer:scarlet>fire

this is an interesting proposition, but only if you count the years when both tunes were in the rotation at the same time.... AND played as second set opener..... and that means, essentially, 1979 and on.... (at that time both were used equally as SECOND SET OPENER)

previous to 79 china>rider was almost always the first set closer, or buried within the set somewhere. scarlet appeared all over the place in its first years, but only settles into it's role with Fire in 77 and then as the second set opener du'jour from 78 on....

SO, i guess my choice rests on the fact that, in the available years, S>F was generally longer, more exciting and jammed out than your average C>R....

but more, they only played China>Rider and Scarlet>Fire in the same show 9 TIMES.... how's about we just say we want both?
